Campbell™ Leadership Index

The CLI Instrument helps measure personal characteristics that are directly related to the nature and demands of leadership.  Once of the basic assumptions underlying the use of this instrument is that effective leaders should have an accurate perception of how they are viewed by others.  For this purpose, the CLI instrument quantifies the perceptions of the leader and selected observers such as subordinates or peers.  This instrument is used as an integrated component of leadership development programs in which individuals can focus on the characteristics and qualities of effective leadership.  The CLI instrument offers:

The ability to gather feedback from those who closely observe an individual’s leadership characteristics within the context of the organization, including direct reports, peers and managers.
Graphs and interpretive data that present the differences between a leader’s self-perception and observer ratings.
A Development Planning Guide for each participant that encourages commitment to an action plan for improvement.

Procedural Checks

Response Percentage Check
Consistency Check

Supplemental Items

Up to 16 supplemental items can be added to the survey.

Normative Data – Norms are based on 1767 individuals and 7414 observers in 30 samples.  The samples include people in positions of leadership in a wide range of environments, such as first-line supervisors, financial services managers, research and development directors, industrial managers, military officers, high-level government officials, university administrators, human resources managers, religions leaders, and corporate executives.

Reports

Standard.  Groups all observers together.  A narrative summary provides an overview of the individual’s results.  Strengths and areas for improvement are highlighted.  An easy-to-read graph displays comparisons between the individual and observer scores for the entire CLI profile.  Numerical representations are also included along with detailed item response information and procedural check scores.

Enhanced.  Breaks out observers by type (minimum three observers per type).  In addition to all of the standard report components, this report graphically plots the observer scores by observer type.  This provides individuals with information on how they are perceived by their superiors, peers, subordinates and others.

Group Profile.  Provides a concise, one-page graph that compares the average standard score of all the individual responses to the average standard score of all the other observer responses.
