The Employee Safety Inventory (ESI™) is a paper-and-pencil inventory that helps measure the safety attitudes and behaviours of job applicants to determine which applicants are more likely to take responsibility for their own safety and who can manage job pressures that sometimes lead to careless behaviour.
The ESI Assessment has been used extensively in Canada by one of the national railways and can be used on both new hires and existing employees. It is easy to administer to groups or individuals, takes less than half an hour and the results are normally sent to you within hours. This instrument is an inexpensive and highly reliable way to pre-screen applicants. It should, however, be used in conjunction with other pre-employment screening procedures such as interviews and reference checks.
The Employee Safety Inventory measures applicants on the following scales:
Safety Control - The Safety Control Scale on the ESI Assessment helps differentiate between those individuals who take responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment from those who typically blame others or fate for their accidents.
Risk Avoidance - The Risk Avoidance Scale on the ESI Assessment helps measure tendencies to engage in high-risk, dangerous and thrill-seeking behaviour.
Stress Tolerance - The Stress Tolerance Scale on the ESI Assessment helps measure an applicant's ongoing experience with stress and ability to cope with stress.
Validity/Candidness - The Validity/Candidness Scale on the ESI Assessment helps measure the extent to which an individual responded to the inventory in a socially desirable manner. Low scores indicate the applicant may have exaggerated positive qualities and minimized negative traits.
Validity/Accuracy - The Validity/Accuracy Scale measures the degree to which the individual understood and carefully completed the inventory.
The Employee Safety Inventory-Quality adds the following scale:
Quality Attitudes - The Quality Attitudes Scale measures an individual’s potential for delivering exemplary, error-free products and services.
