Occupational Stress Inventory

Most of the instruments that have been developed to measure stress in work have ignored the work context dimension. Many studies have failed to give substantial recognition to the stress involved in specific job roles that cut across both occupational fields and levels. The revised edition of the Occupational Stress Inventory overcomes these shortcomings by measuring domains of occupational adjustment that include:

occupational stress,
stress associated with one’s inability to cope effectively with stressors in the workplace and other settings,
the coping resources available to the individual to combat the effects of stressors and to alleviate strain

The OSI scales assess three dimensions of occupational adjustment:

Occupational stress is measured by a set of 6 scales that comprise the Occupational Roles Questionnaire. The ORQ scales measure the following stress-inducing work roles:

Role Overload
Role Insufficiency
Role Ambiguity
Role Boundary
Responsibility
Physical Environment

Psychological strain is measured by a set of 4 scales that comprise the Personal Strain Questionnaire. The PSQ scales reflect affective responses in four major categories:

Vocational Strain
Psychological Strain
Interpersonal Strain
Physical Strain

Coping resources are measured by 4 scales the comprise the Personal Resources Questionnaire:

Recreation
Self-Care
Social Support
Rational/Cognitive Coping

Other features of this instrument:

140 items
5th grade reading level
can be hand scored
norms provided for males and females in 6 occupational groups, executive, professional, technical, administrative support, public service/safety, agricultural/production/labourer
case studies aid in interpretation, correlational and multivariate studies provide evidence of the relationship among stress, strain and coping.
