Give your managers the feedback they need. Use the manager portfolio to assess your first to mid-level managers – those directly involved in executing strategy, managing performance and attracting and retaining talent in your organization. Based on research into how managers make a difference to team performance, this tool measures those competencies that set outstanding managers apart.
They are organized into four key areas:
• managing yourself – managing your own behaviour to increase your effectiveness
• managing the team – developing team members and holding them accountable
• managing the work – achieving results and resolutions
• managing collaboratively – interacting effectively with others outside your team.
The manager portfolio encourages managers to draw on their strengths, and sets out specific target levels that they can aspire to. The manager portfolio was derived by an in-depth analysis of an extensive database of competencies, in particular those of outstanding mid and first-level managers. In creating this model the publishers sought to include those competencies that are most critical in defining excellence in management roles across a wide variety of industries.
The Manager Portfolio is a 360º on-line tool that measures 11 competencies shown to differentiate outstanding managers. The tool is based on competency models of managers from numerous organizations documented in Spencer and Spencer’s Competence at Work.
Competency feedback is provided in terms of demonstrated level of sophistication. Each competency has a target level that differentiates the outstanding performers. Respondents provide their feedback on specific competency behaviors as well as verbatim comments. This tool is best used with first-level through mid-level managers.
